Introduction

Kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala), known locally as Sukuma Wiki, is the most consumed vegetable in Kenya. It is a fast-growing, nutritious crop that can be harvested within 6-8 weeks of transplanting.

Recommended Varieties

Thousand Headed Kale - Most popular, multi-stemmed, high yield

Land Preparation

Deep plough and harrow
Apply 10 tonnes/ha well-decomposed manure
Soil pH: 5.5-6.5
Well-drained fertile soils preferred

Planting

Nursery: Broadcast seed in nursery, transplant at 4-5 weeks
Direct seeding: Possible but wasteful of seed
Spacing: 60cm × 60cm (open field), 45cm × 45cm (intensive)
Seed rate: 1kg/ha (nursery method)

Fertilizer

Basal: CAN or DAP at 50kg per acre at planting
Top dress: CAN 50kg/acre at 3 weeks and 6 weeks
Foliar: Spray micronutrients at 3-week intervals

Irrigation

Supplemental irrigation during dry spells
Water weekly during establishment
Overhead irrigation acceptable for kale

Pest & Disease Management

Pests:

Diamond Back Moth (DBM) - Most damaging pest Treatment: Spinosad (most effective), Emamectin benzoate Rotate insecticides to prevent resistance
Aphids - Common, especially in dry conditions Treatment: Imidacloprid, Pymetrozine
Cutworms - Attack seedlings at soil level Treatment: Soil drench with Chlorpyrifos

Diseases:

Black Rot (Xanthomonas) - V-shaped yellow lesions Prevention: Certified seed, crop rotation, avoid overhead irrigation
Downy Mildew - Yellow patches, purple mold below Treatment: Metalaxyl + Mancozeb
Clubroot - Swollen roots, stunting Prevention: Lime soil (raise pH), avoid waterlogged soils

Harvesting

First harvest: 6-8 weeks after transplanting
Harvest outer leaves - allows regrowth
Harvest every 2-3 weeks for 6-12 months
Yield: 20-30 tonnes/ha

Sell at local market, roadside, or to brokers
Kale is consumed daily - consistent demand
Best prices: Early morning delivery to markets
