Irish Potato Farming in Kenya

Introduction

Irish potato (Solanum tuberosum) is Kenya's most important horticultural crop by value, with annual production of 2.5 million tonnes. It is the main cash crop in the Central and Rift Valley highlands, grown primarily in Nyandarua, Meru, Nakuru, Bomet and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

Ecological Requirements

Altitude: 1,500-3,000m (best: 1,800-2,500m)
Temperature: 10-25C (optimum 15-20C)
Rainfall: 750-1,200mm well distributed
Soil: Deep, loose, well-drained sandy loam
pH: 5.0-6.5

Certified Seed Varieties (KALRO Released)

Early Maturing (90-100 days):

Shangi - Most popular, cream flesh, oval tubers. Yield: 20-30 tonnes/ha, moderately late blight resistant
Jaber - Yellow flesh, round tubers, 95 days

Mid-Season (100-120 days):

Kenya Mpya - White flesh, late blight tolerant. Yield: 25-35 tonnes/ha
Asante - White flesh, good cooking quality

Late Maturing (120-150 days):

Tigoni - KALRO flagship variety, high yield. Yield: 30-40 tonnes/ha, late blight tolerant
Dutch Robijn - Processing variety (crisps/fries)

IMPORTANT: Always Use Certified Seed

Certified seed prevents soil-borne diseases
Buy from KALRO certified seed multipliers
Reject small, diseased or sprouted seed
Do NOT plant farm-saved seed more than 3 seasons

Land Preparation

Deep plough (30cm) - potatoes need loose soil for tuber expansion
Apply 10 tonnes/ha farmyard manure + incorporate
Mark ridges: 75cm apart, 30cm high
Plant on ridges (not flat) - improves drainage, earthing up

Planting

Spacing: 75cm between rows x 30cm between plants
Seed rate: 1,500-2,000kg/ha certified seed
Planting depth: 10cm
Season: Long rains (February-April) or Short rains (August-October)
Break seed dormancy: expose to light 2 weeks before planting

Fertilization

Basal at planting: DAP 200kg/ha or compound NPK
Top dress at earthing up (6 weeks): CAN 150kg/ha
Foliar: Calcium + Boron at tuber initiation stage

Earthing Up

Critical practice - do at 6 weeks when plants are 20-25cm
Hill soil around plant base (15-20cm high)
Prevents greening of tubers
Improves yield and tuber quality

Pest and Disease Management

Late Blight (Phytophthora infestans) - MOST CRITICAL:

Most devastating disease - can destroy entire crop in 7-10 days
Symptoms: Water-soaked lesions on leaves, white sporulation below
Favored by: Cool, wet weather (above 90% humidity, 12-20C)

Management:

Preventive spraying BEFORE symptoms appear
Start spraying at 6-8 weeks after planting
Spray interval: 7 days (wet weather), 14 days (dry weather)
Products: Ridomil MZ, Revus, Infinito, Cymoxanil+Mancozeb
Rotate fungicide groups to prevent resistance
Use late blight tolerant varieties (Tigoni, Kenya Mpya)

Early Blight:

Brown spots with concentric rings on older leaves
Treatment: Mancozeb, Chlorothalonil

Pests:

Potato Tuber Moth - Larvae tunnel into tubers. Treatment: Spinosad, clean seed, destroy volunteer plants
Aphids - Transmit viruses. Treatment: Imidacloprid at first sign

Harvesting

Maturity signs: Leaves yellow and die back, skin sets (does not peel when rubbed)
Test dig: Check tuber size 2 weeks before expected maturity
Harvest 2-3 weeks after haulm dies back
Harvest in dry weather - reduces rot in storage
Yield: 15-25 tonnes/ha smallholder, 25-40 tonnes/ha improved management

Post-Harvest Handling

Cure in field 1-2 hours (hardens skin)
Grade: Ware (>55mm), Seed (35-55mm), Chats (<35mm)
Store in dark, cool, ventilated store (8-10C)
DO NOT store in sunlight (greening causes solanine build-up)

Sell at farm gate, local market, Nairobi wholesale
Wakulima Market (Nairobi): major hub
Supermarkets: premium for clean, graded potatoes
Processing: Kenya Crisps, Farmer's Choice
Price range: KSh 15-40/kg (seasonal variation)
