Green Gram (Ndengu) Farming in Kenya
A guide to growing green grams (ndengu) in Kenya's arid and semi-arid regions - covering drought-tolerant varieties, minimal input farming and market opportunities.
Introduction
Green gram (Vigna radiata), known as Ndengu in Kenya, is a drought-tolerant legume grown in semi-arid areas of Eastern, Coast and Rift Valley Kenya. It is gaining popularity as a high-protein export crop with growing demand in Asian markets.
Why Grow Green Grams?
- Highly drought tolerant - survives on 300-400mm rainfall
- Short season: 60-75 days
- High protein content (24%) - food security crop
- Growing export market (India, Pakistan, Middle East)
- Improves soil nitrogen
- Low production costs
Recommended Varieties
- N26 (KALRO) - Most popular, green seeds, 65 days
- KS20 (KALRO) - High yielding, 70 days, larger seeds
- Biashara - Export grade, large seeds, 75 days
- Perkara - Early maturing, 60 days, drought tolerant
Ecological Requirements
- Rainfall: 300-600mm (drought tolerant)
- Temperature: 25-35C
- Altitude: Below 1,500m
- Soil: Sandy loam to loam, pH 6.0-7.0
- Avoid: Waterlogged soils, cold highlands
Best Growing Areas
- Machakos, Makueni, Kitui (Eastern)
- Taita Taveta, Kwale (Coast)
- Kajiado, Narok (Rift Valley)
- Tharaka Nithi (Eastern)
Planting
- Season: Short rains (October-November) best. Long rains (March-April) possible
- Spacing: 40cm x 10cm or 30cm x 15cm
- Seed rate: 8-12 kg/acre
- Depth: 2-3cm
- Inoculate with Rhizobium for better nodulation
Fertilization
- Minimal fertilizer needed
- Basal: DAP 25kg/acre (phosphorus only)
- No nitrogen needed (legume)
- Foliar micronutrients optional
Pest and Disease Management
Pests:
- Pod Borer (Maruca) - Most damaging pest. Larvae bore into pods and eat seeds. Treatment: Spinosad, Emamectin benzoate. Spray at 50% flowering
- Aphids - Transmit viruses. Treatment: Imidacloprid
Diseases:
- Powdery Mildew - White powder on leaves. Treatment: Sulphur, Myclobutanil
- Cercospora Leaf Spot - Brown spots. Treatment: Mancozeb
Harvesting
- Harvest when 70-80% of pods are black/dry
- Harvest in 2-3 picks (pods mature unevenly)
- Or harvest entire plant at once (faster but lower yield)
- Thresh by beating on tarp
- Dry to 12% moisture
- Yield: 300-600kg/acre (rainfed), 600-1,000kg/acre (irrigated)
Marketing
- Local market: KSh 80-120/kg
- Export grade: KSh 100-150/kg
- Export buyers in Nairobi: Bidco, Export Trading Group
- East Africa: Uganda, Tanzania
- International: India, Pakistan (high demand)
Profitability (1 acre)
- Seed + fertilizer: KSh 8,000-12,000
- Labour: KSh 5,000-8,000
- Total cost: KSh 13,000-20,000
- Yield: 300-500kg
- Revenue at KSh 100/kg: KSh 30,000-50,000
- Net profit: KSh 10,000-37,000
- Low investment, reliable returns in dry areas
