Commercial Avocado Farming in Kenya

Introduction

Kenya is one of Africa's leading avocado producers, with exports earning over USD 150 million annually. The fruit is grown in Central, Eastern, Rift Valley and Western Kenya, with Murang'a, Meru, Nyeri and Bomet as major production counties.

Recommended Varieties

Export Varieties:

• Hass - Purple-black when ripe, creamy flesh, most exported variety. Yield: 200-400 fruits/tree/year. Market: Europe, Middle East
• Jumbo/Fuerte - Green when ripe, smooth skin, large fruit. Yield: 150-300 fruits/tree/year. Market: Local + regional

Local Market Varieties:

• Lula - Large green fruit, local markets
• Booth 7 - Hardy, disease resistant
• Tower 2 - High yielding, adapted to high altitudes

Ecological Requirements

• Altitude: 1,000-2,200m above sea level
• Rainfall: 1,000-1,600mm annually (well distributed)
• Temperature: 20-28C (frost kills young trees)
• Soil: Deep, well-drained loam, pH 5.5-7.0
• Avoid: Waterlogged soils, frost-prone valleys

Orchard Establishment

Land Preparation:

• Clear land and remove stumps
• Deep plough 60cm
• Mark out planting holes: 8m x 8m spacing (156 trees/acre)
• Dig holes: 60cm x 60cm x 60cm
• Fill with topsoil + 2 buckets manure + 200g DSP fertilizer
• Allow holes to settle 2 weeks before planting

Planting:

• Plant at onset of long rains (March-April)
• Use grafted seedlings from certified nurseries
• Grafted trees fruit in 3-4 years (seedlings take 7-10 years)
• Stake young trees against wind
• Mulch heavily around base (60cm radius)
• Water weekly for first 6 months

Crop Management

Irrigation:

• Critical during dry seasons (Jan-Feb, July-Sept)
• Drip irrigation preferred - 40-60 liters/tree/week
• Overhead irrigation increases fungal diseases

Fertilization:

• Year 1-2: CAN 100g/tree every 3 months
• Year 3+: NPK 17:17:17 - 500g/tree twice yearly, plus CAN 300g/tree after flowering
• Zinc deficiency common - apply zinc sulfate foliar spray

Pruning:

• Year 1-2: formative pruning (shape the tree)
• Remove crossing branches, water shoots
• Open center pruning - allows light penetration
• After harvest: remove dead/diseased wood

Pest and Disease Management

Pests:

• Avocado Thrips - Scarring on fruit skin. Treatment: Spinosad, Abamectin
• False Codling Moth - Larva bores into fruit. Treatment: Pheromone traps, Spinosad
• Mites - Bronzing of leaves. Treatment: Abamectin, wettable sulphur

Diseases:

• Phytophthora Root Rot - Most devastating disease. Prevention: Well-drained soils, avoid overwatering. Treatment: Metalaxyl soil drench
• Anthracnose - Black spots on fruit (post-harvest). Prevention: Hot water treatment (48C, 15 min) before storage
• Cercospora Spot - Yellow-brown leaf spots. Treatment: Mancozeb, Copper oxychloride

Harvesting

Maturity indicators:

• Hass: skin turns from green to purple-black
• Fuerte: fruit feels slightly soft when squeezed gently
• Dry matter content: >21% (laboratory test)
• Days after full bloom: 12-15 months (Hass), 9-12 months (Fuerte)

Harvesting practice:

• Use picking poles with cutting blades
• Leave 1cm stem attached to fruit
• Handle gently - bruising causes black spots
• Harvest in cool morning hours

Yields:

• Year 3-4 (first harvest): 50-100 fruits/tree
• Year 5-7: 100-200 fruits/tree
• Year 8+: 200-400 fruits/tree (Hass)

Post-Harvest Handling

For local market:

• Grade by size and quality
• Store at 7-13C (ethylene-free cold room)
• Shelf life: 2-4 weeks at 7C

For export:

• Hot water treatment: 48C for 15 minutes (pest control)
• Wax coating (reduces moisture loss)
• Grade: A (>250g), B (200-250g), C (<200g)
• Pack in 4kg cartons
• Pre-cool to 7C before shipping
• Ship in refrigerated containers (5.5C)
